Wilkins's creative research and projects are rooted in the interconnections of American contemporary performance, cultural history, and identities of Black men. His projects examine the raced dancing body and the ways that ritual can access forms of knowledge. Intrigued by ideas about indeterminacy in creative process and performance, he approaches performance and pedagogy as means of re-framing perspectives, creative practices, and technical training. In his intermedia collaborations he works with artists from a wide range of disciplines, including film, video, and design.

Wilkins make his debut in southwest Michigan as part of Kalamazoo’s signature Midwest RAD Fest with the performance of The Conversation Series: Stitching the Geopolitical Quilt to Re-Body Belonging –a multi-dimensional evening-length dance production that confronts and celebrates heritage, resiliency, justice, and hope. Performance will be followed by a Post-Talk/Q&A. Leading up to the performance, Wilkins and his duet-partner A. Ryder Turner will engage local community members in conversations and FREE workshops that he identifies as Systems for Care & Repair.

Helanius performs in the July 29th lineup. Performance will include a new duet with Avery Ryder Turner as well as a reprise of Untitled Meditation, a solo he premiered as part of Boulder Arts Outdoors' (BAO) inaugural August 2020 event.
During August and September of 2020, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Boulder Arts Outdoors created a safe platform for live performance with two packed drive-in performance series that presented 25 acts and 79 local artists. Inaugural BAO performances featured Latin American folk music, contemporary dance, Indigenous music and dance, classical ballet, djembe drumming, samba dance and music, bluegrass, chamber music, and more. In 2021, Boulder Arts Outdoors is thrilled to carry its mission forward and to continue celebrating the region's unique, culturally diverse voices and award-winning performers.

This is part of an ongoing art and social justice-based work called The Conversations Series: Stitching the Geopolitical Quilt to Re-Body Belonging. With support made possible through a Colorado Creates Creative Corps ARP grant from Colorado Creative Industries with support by the National Endowment for the Arts and an Arts in Society grant. This work is nationwide and will include Lafayette as well as several Colorado communities.
